Student Built and Driven EV Sets World Record for 0-100 km/h sprint

The cool thing about an EV as far as performance goes is that all of the torque is available as soon as you step on the pedal. It’s not like a gas-powered car where torque has to build to peak. In an EV, all the torque is there when you want it resulting in better performance. A group of students from German has created a racing EV that has set a new Guinness World Record for 0-100 km/h sprint time.

The tiny little racing EV made the run to 100 km/h in a scant 1.779 seconds. That record setting run bested the old world record by a mere 0.006 seconds. You can bet that other teams participating are out to get the record next time.

The racing EV is AWD and has 100kW of power. It uses four electric motors and a 6.62 kWh battery. The entire car weighs 160kg giving it a power to weight ratio of 1.6 kg/kW. The power to weight ratio of a F1 car is 1.9 kg/kW and a Bugatti Veryron has a power to weight of 2.08 kg/kW. The record will be officially verified in the coming weeks.
